NAME: nobuchika ginoza
CANON: psycho pass
CANON POINT: post movie
AGE: 33
BACKGROUND: here.
PERSONALITY:
Gino is a complicated character, full of nuances and contradictions. It's part of what makes him a very relatable character, and also what makes him somewhat hard to understand. That said, Gino is also a fairly predictable person, and the direct contrast in him is how willing he is to give out advice that he himself does not follow.
To be entirely fair to Gino, he is a character who has suffered a lot in his life, due to the nature of the world he's lived in. As a child, the notion of having an Enforcer as a father was beyond embarrassing — it was downright taboo, as if his father's inherently bad genes ran through his veins, like a toxin, like something someone could catch. As a result, Gino grew up a shy and insecure child, constantly berated and bullied by his classmates. It's a line of thought you can see catch up to him even in his adult life — having hardened his skin to steel, being outwardly cold in his demeanor.
But it's not the truth of who Gino is, not on the inside. In recent times he's broken down that protective barrier just a bit, allowed himself to feel his emotions more freely, cracking out of his shell bit by bit. Still, there's a disconnect between who he presents himself as, and who he really is. On the inside, Gino is deeply, painfully sensitive. Due to what he considers a wave of betrayals — first his father in becoming an Enforcer, then Kogami in becoming an Enforcer, then his father in dying, and then Kogami in abandoning him — he also considers himself to be profoundly unworthy of love. He is a basket case of human emotion, every bad thing in his life piling up to what he considers is a grand truth. Everyone he loves leaves him. Self-loathing and Gino are old friends.
Despite his affinity to playing the victim in these times, almost stubbornly refusing to see the other person's side, or explaining their excuses away by using intellect that Gino believes is obvious, he still craves approval, from both his father and his best friend. Eventually, he makes the same mistakes his father did, not seeking help for his cloudy Psycho Pass, and just letting it grow further and further from the acceptable range, which shows that what he's most critical of in other people, are traits he finds in himself. Both stubborn, and dedicated to his job to a fault, Gino has begun to accept the similarities between himself and his father, after he himself gets demoted to Enforcer, after his father's death.
Even with what must be a rather tumultuous combinations of emotions constantly spiraling around in Gino, he maintains himself by being outwardly confident and cool. It isn't a complete mask he wears anyway, having recently come more in his skin, and after years of denying who he really is, finally begin accepting that positive traits his father had and that he shares. Forgiveness is something Gino has had to learn, through tears and blood and loss — and it's something he continues to learn, every day. Whereas the Inspector Gino was outwardly rigid and cold, Enforcer Gino is less afraid to show compassion, detailing a genuine love and care for his friends and their well beings.
Gino is a man who take failure and loss as direct evidence to his own shortcomings. Low self-esteem has been written as his greatest weakness, and it stands as more than just finding himself lacking — in reality he is as good a detective as Kogami, but he doubts himself, lacking the confidence it takes to believe in his own conclusions. Though Gino feels content to blame others for the pain in his life, the only real thing standing between him and greatness is himself.
Even with all of Gino's flaws, when it comes down to it he is a brilliant detective — smart and cunning and capable of quick thinking, act under pressure type scenarios. He can fall into Kogami's shadow due to the lack of trust he has in himself, but of the two of them Gino is certainly the more responsible one, the one more likely to own up to his mistakes than allowing them to consume him. Gino is clinically self-reflective, and in that way he's always trying to better himself. He isn't ignorant or unaware of his flaws — ultimately, no one is more critical of Gino than himself, which is a blinding strength of his. The ability to reflect on what he's done, and the urge to always do better.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
As a detective, Gino's body had to be kept in peak physical condition. However, given than Enforcers do more of the heavy lifting than Inspectors, after his demotion Gino really bulked up in terms of muscle and body fat, moving from a good physique to a great one. As well as being physically fit, he's been trained in hand to hand combat, and in using a handgun.
With all that, Gino also has the skill of being a great detective. He's about as good as they come in his turnover rate, but he's not much compared to Kogami's Sherlock Holmes-esque repertoire.
After the loss of his left arm, Gino got it replaced by a metal prosthetic. It's about what you'd expect — just a normal arm shape, with an increase in weight and strength.
